Without a doubt this has been the craziest race of the season. The weekend began with the announcement of the dismissal of Monisha Kaltenborn as director of the team Sauber. The team announced that it would not count on her for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and would soon announce a replacement. In this way, the team Sauber faced the weekend without a team leader and without knowing who will be the replacement of Monisha Kaltenborn. But nothing comparable to the action that has been on track, where the safety car has been the protagonist of the race.
Free practice made it clear that it was going to be a race full of incidents. I've never seen a practice session with so many trouble. The asphalt of Baku, as it is an urban circuit, was very dirty and had very little adherence. In addition, the circuit has very narrow areas, so it is no surprise that the race has been so amazing.
Hamilton was on pole, followed by team-mate Bottas and Raikkonen. The start did not go without an incident. Hamilton maintained his first position, but Bottas beat Raikkonen when the Fin tried to overtake him. Sainz spin to dodge his partner Kvyat. With all these incidents Vettel who became fourth went up to the second position and Perez that exited sixth went up until the third place. Verstappen had problems again, so he was forced to stop the car caused by problems with his engine, provoking the first safety car. Although it would not be the last, since five laps later it would appear again so that the commissioners could clean the track form parts laying on the track after a collision between Perez and Raikkonen.
The emotions went hot during the second safety car. Hamilton braked suddenly before the race has been restarted. This move surprised Vettel who hit the back of Hamilton's car. The German was very angry drove his car beside Hamilton. Then he turned the wheel and deliberately hit the Englishman's car. This action was punished with a stop and go penalty of ten seconds and three points of his license.
For the safety car in Baku there were no two without three, the Force India who were making a very good race, hit eachother. Ocon ended up with a puncture and Perez with the broken front wing. The track remained very dirty after the incident of Force India, Kimi suffered a puncture and returned to the box and the safety car came out again. But this was not enough and finally the race director decided wave the red flag. After the re-launching of the race Ricciardo overtook Stroll and Massa. This move would end up giving him the victory. Vettel was forced to comply with the sanction imposed by race directors. For the Ferrari driver's luck, Hamilton was also in trouble. The Mercedes pilot had loosened his headrest and was forced into the pits.
Finally, the race finished with the victory of Ricciardo, the second position for Bottas and the third for a surprised Stroll, who lost the second position in the last moment to the pilot of Mercedes
Yes, so crazy, but what about Force India? Could they win ?
Hello Robert,
I don´t know if they could have won. That is speculating too much. But they had the victory near. In Canada, the drivers of Force India already had an incident without consequences. Now in Baku the same situation left them without opportunities in the race. The team must manage these types of incidents, so that their own interests are not injured.
